Outer World Map iteration and annotation

Exploring ways to annotate the original world map with the more detailed region locations.

Version 1: Contextual
Like the full page-ness here, would be impactful on page flip.

Version 2: Look up tableThink this gives clearer segmentation of the 3 core surface regions
Have put the regions corresponding areas/landmasses directly underneath the map, so you can look straight down to find the names of the notable areas.

  1. I am partial to the 1st admittedly, it's so striking! But the 2nd is a bit easier to parse, just has less of a wham to it.

  2. They're both good, but I think the 1st is a little better. It's more open and spread out. Visually it's easier for me to parse and read.

  3. I think the first option has much more visual impact (as you say) and makes it easier to see what each location is at a glance. You could add in very narrow colored bars at the bottom of the map to help further delineate each territory in the same way the second one does.

The main use of the second map would be to facilitate looking up a location where you knew the name but not where it was on the map. It's easier to find the name on the list and then find the number on the map than it is to search the whole map for the name. So the second map has a use, but it's much more purely a reference, while the first map is the kind of thing you might like a poster of.

  4. both are a perfect example of how to rape cartography with data.

Where is the map? Too much icing and not enough cake.

    1. Strongly worded! I but I agree with the sentiment. I'm finding it difficult to balance an evocative image and all the data it needs to display. This is probably actually more of an infographic than a map.

There is a plan to do a player facing poster size game map which would be all 'cake'.

    2. Not a big fan of throwing around that terminology for something as casual as a pretend world map.

  5. I was about to say the second one, since it's more traditional and ordered, but on a second glance, I have to say the first one. Is such a pleasure to reference it!

    1. I'm going to have another run at this. The map is lost to the white annotations in the first, but have a few ideas on how to sort that.
